Information You Should Know in Montgomery County Public Schools
I am informing you of programs and activities available for your children. Please read over the messages below regarding Pre-K and Summer Programs that are available for your students. Look over the information and share with your friends and neighbors who may be interested or have needs for the programs available for youth.
Please read information regarding MCPS Safety concerns: http://www.mymcpnews.com/2018 /03/04/mcpd-statement-regardin g-school-threats/
On behalf of the Montgomery County Police Department's School Safety Unit, I'm sharing information about their annual Safety Patrol Summer Leadership Camp - a week long sleep-away camp specifically geared towards rising 5th graders who will be part of their elementary school Safety Patrol team for the coming year.
A brief summary is attached. Officer Jim Whalen is the point of contact. The camp is held at Summit Lake Camp in Emmitsburg. Here are the answers to a few questions I asked:
- MCPD has been hosting the camp for years -- in the past, they've had wait-lists -- the past couple of years they have had unfilled spots
- MCPS supports the camp by providing the buses and drivers to take campers to/from the camp, and the staging location - which is Redland Middle School
- AAA Mid-Atlantic is also a sponsor
- All youth counselors for this summer's camp sessions have already been chosen
If you, like me, were unaware of the camp --- even though you have a student who is/was a safety patrol - generally MCPD School Safety Unit relies on the schools and school safety patrol coordinators to share the information about the camp. Often -- as patrols at many schools aren't chosen til late May/early June -- information about the camp gets lost in the end-of-year quasi-chaos, and/or arrives after families have made their summer/summer camp plans.... so Officer Whalen is asking our help in putting this information on the collective radar screens of our elementary schools sooner rather than later!
Here's a link to the Safety Patrol Summer Camp website: http://patrolleadershipcamp.cf sites.org/
Here is a link to the website for Summit Lake Camp -- MCPD rents the entire camp for the two sessions of Safety Patrol camp: http://summitlake.org/about.ht ml
And - if you've actually had a student attend the camp, please share your experience!
Thanks everyone,
